Biography

Mr Edwin Lye is the Deputy Executive Director of the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF). He is active in tripartite discussions; and represents the voice of employers as a member of the Tripartite Oversight Committee on Workplace Safety and Health, MINDEF Total Defence Awards Evaluation Board and National Workplace Learning Certification Award Committee. Prior to this, he was the General Secretary of the Singapore Teachers’ Union and the Vice-President of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). In acknowledgement of his various contributions, Mr Lye received the NTUC Comrade of Labour Award in 2007 and was conferred the Public Service Medal Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (PBM) at the 2012 Singapore National Day Awards.

Biography

Mr Tim Lo Surdo is the founder of Democracy in Colour — Australia’s first racial and economic justice organisation led by people of colour. Previously, he worked with low-paid workers to set up Hospo Voice — a new union in hospitality. He was Head of Campaigns at Oaktree, Senior Adviser to two Senators, Campaigns Director at Jhatkaa, National Communications Director at UN Youth Australia, and co-founded Open Sky. He has served as a Non-Executive Director on 14 Boards and is currently a Director of Plan International, No to Violence, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Environment Victoria, Alliance for Gambling Reform, Inner Melbourne Community Legal, Cultural Facilities Corporation, and the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund. Tim was appointed in 2020 as one of 17 UN Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Every developed nation grapples with an ageing population and Singapore is no exception. Must mature employees all eventually find themselves displaced by time and technology? Biography

Dr Helen Ko is an Associate Professor with the Singapore University of Social Sciences, teaching courses in the Master and PhD in Gerontology Programmes. She is concurrently Executive Director of Beyond Age, a training consultancy with deep expertise on ageing issues. For over 30 years, she pioneered the development of several programmes/services for seniors in Singapore, including seniors’ employment and employability programmes.

She has conducted research on Singapore’s ageing workforce and authored/co-authored five books. Based on her award-winning research, she has developed a model for teaching mature employees. A/Prof Ko has served on various national committees in Singapore, including the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Ageing Population.

In the workplace, there is strength in diversity, yet persons with disabilities often face infrastructure, attitudinal and communication barriers when seeking employment. As a society that aims to be inclusive, Singapore has begun removing these barriers, but often employers/supervisors are not aware of how to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities in the workplace, especially when it comes to health and safety concerns. Disabled People’s Association (DPA) aims to build an inclusive society where everyone can participate in all aspects of life from education to employment and access to social integration. Learn from DPA’s disabled leaders about the best practices companies can adopt to address WSH concerns, how to avoid common issues and where to find expert advice on integrating employees with disabilities into the workforce.

Biography

Mr Richard Kuppusamy is a chartered British Architect with more than 20 years of experience in the AEC industry. As the Head of Lendlease Digital Asia, he leads a team of over 75 people in a property developer’s in-house agile software engineering venture. Prior to joining Lendlease, he was an accomplished architect in an award-winning practice, WOHA, where he was a project architect for Kampung Admiralty which has won the awards for the World Architecture Festival Building of the Year 2018, Council for Tall Buildings, and the Urban Habitat Best Tall Mixed-use Building 2019. Mr Kuppusamy, having practised as an Access Consultant in London and combined with his personal experience of disability, is an advocate for equality and civil rights for disabled people. He serves on the board of several non-profit social service organisations including the Disabled People’s Association (DPA) where he has been a President since 2017, and as a Director of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Care Fund which provides financial support for servicemen injured in the line of duty.

Biography

Mr Bernard Menon is the Executive Director of the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), a joint initiative of the Singapore National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF). He concurrently serves as NTUC’s Director for its Migrant Worker Segment. As the MWC’s founding Executive Director, Mr Menon helped to set up the organisation in 2009 and has led the day-to-day operations and strategy for the outfit since – growing the MWC from a 5-man help centre for needy and distressed migrant workers to where it is today, where it is widely regarded as the leading migrant worker advocacy and direct assistance organisation in the country.

Engineer (Er) Ho Siong Hin is currently the Senior Director for International Workplace Safety and Health with the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore. He holds the concurrent appointment of Vice Dean for the School Regulation under the Ministry of Manpower Academy.

Mr Ang Wee Tiong is a Singaporean computer scientist and software entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of JobTech — the world’s leading artificial intelligence and big labour data analytics product company that empowers leaders to develop people for new work realities, driven by real labour market needs and individuals’ personal aspirations. He is an avid hacker and one of the scientists who developed advanced deep learning models to make computers understand human content, behaviours and automating “mundane” tasks, during his 12-year stint as a researcher at A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research where he spearheaded artificial intelligence research development and translation. Today, he uses his inventions to understand labour market inefficiencies, correlate education and skills to employment outcomes, and to help people learn and future-proof themselves with the help of labour market and education data.

Biography

Dr Justina Tan is the Director of the Learning and Professional Division in the Institute for Adult Learning (IAL), Singapore University of Social Sciences. She holds Doctor of Education (EdD) degrees from University College London, Institute of Education and Nanyang Technological University. She also has a MA from Columbia University, Teachers College, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and Bachelor of Communication Studies (Hons) from Nanyang Technological University.

Dr Tan leads the teams in helping enterprises deepen workplace learning and engage in employee-driven innovation. She specialises in mentoring and coaching, and has done extensive work with organisations. She is also recognised for her mentoring and coaching expertise, particularly in the education realm. She has also extensive experience in consulting and teaching in countries such as the US, China, Bahrain, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Synopsis | Technology Enhanced Learning and Training: Getting Serious About Serious Games

The spectrum of ‘how to train’ has broadened with the advancement in technology. Game-based training, for instance, can improve WSH learning outcomes. Through interactive games, trainees can focus on the learning objective and learn better and faster in a safe environment. A simulation training facility has been set up by SingHealth and Duke-NUS Medical School to hone the skills of healthcare professionals with the help of serious games. It houses a range of extended reality and immersive technologies to facilitate experiential learning. Biography

Prof Fatimah Lateef is the Senior Consultant, Director of Undergraduate Training and Education as well as the Director of Clinical Service and Quality at the Department of Emergency Medicine, Singapore General Hospital. She is also a Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Yong Loo Lin Medical School, National University of Singapore and Lee Kong Chian Medical School, Nanyang Technological University. Her areas of sub-specialisation include Prehospital Care Medicine, Cardiovascular and Neurovascular Emergencies. She is passionate about Medical Education, Leadership Training, International Humanitarian Medicine and Simulation/ Technology-driven Education.

Prof Fatimah is the Director of SingHealth Duke NUS Institute of Medical Simulation, where she is also an active educator and facilitator. With the first three years of formation, she brought the centre through into the global arena with the achievement of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) international accreditation. Her strong servant leadership style as well as transformative model for negotiating change and uplifting and enhancing lives, people and organisations, ensure the values she holds close to her heart are executed. She has presented more than 500 abstracts at international conferences and published over 300 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. She is an active volunteer in the area of International Humanitarian Medicine and Acute Disaster Response.

Ms Wong Su Yen is Chairperson of the Singapore Institute of Directors. She is an experienced independent director who has served on the Boards of several public, private, and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, Asia, and the United States. She is a professional speaker who engages audiences globally on the future of work, reinvention diversity and governance. Mr Benjamin Chua is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Speco, an Invironment Protection company that keeps the world safe from viruses, bacteria and other types of invisible dangers. He believes that a business can do well by doing good and he has proven that with Speco which was incepted as an innovation-driven social enterprise to help disadvantaged Singaporeans such as single parents, disabled people and ex-offenders. Under his leadership, Speco has expanded into the region including Malaysia, Taiwan and Phillipines. Speco has also won numerous awards including the IPOS IP Award 2020 and the President’s Volunteer and Philanthropy Award 2021.

Er Lim Sui Soon is an adult educator lecturing in NTU, a member of WSH Council Manufacturing Committee, and a master instructor in traditional Taekwon-Do. Prior to his retirement from Cameron-Schlumberger, Er Lim had worked as Global Director of HSE, Regional Quality Manager, and Six Sigma Black Belt and Manufacturing Manager in his 33-year career. Er Lim graduated from NTU with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He is a registered WSH Officer and Professional Engineer. Er Lim is currently working on initiatives in SISO to help WSH community members to develop further professionally and personally.

Synopsis | Multifunctional wheel loader (2021 Winner of WSH Innovation Awards)

The Speaker will share about a wheel loader, modified to perform trimming work in cargo hatch. Sensors and programmable logic control are used to operate the brush with automatic extension-retraction for various vessels. The result of this innovation is reduced manpower and exposure to cement dust.

Biography

Mr Parikshit Kulkarni received his Masters in Project Management from National University of Singapore. After getting a Degree in Architecture, he spent 16 years in his career in design, construction, project management, facility management and operational technology development. He is passionate about developing new technology-driven solutions for operational safety and efficiency. He believes that while innovation is key to developing good techology solutions, they need to suit the context and must not be developed in isolation. Understanding the end user’s mindset and challenges are critical to the adoption of innovation.

Synopsis | Silane Apache & Silane Alpinist (2020 Winner of WSH Innovation Awards)

The speaker will share about an unmanned sprayer, designed and fabricated for use on internal and external concrete walls. Silane Apache is used for internal walls and consists of four pressure rotating sprayers lowered by chain hoists, whereas Silane Alpinist, a 14m-long spreader raised and lowered by a tower crane, is used for external walls. This innovation has helped to eliminate work at height risks and exposure to toxic fumes.

At Tuas Terminal Phase 2 (TTP2) Caisson Casting Yard Land Reclamation Project by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Mr Mohamad Azlan was responsible for the overall safety and health matters for the fabrication of 227 Caissons. Prior to his stint in TTP2, he was involved in the Proposed Reclamation at Tuas Finger One Project under Jurong Town Corporation. Armed with approximately 8 years of experience in Land Reclamation and 17 years in the Construction Industry, Mr Azlan and his team from Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. clinched the SCAL WSH Innovation Awards 2020 – Gold Award. He also presented and shared the award winning innovation during the WAH Symposium 2021 with the industry.

Biography

Mr Danny Chua is currently the Chief Executive Officer for CYC International Pte Ltd. He has created and patented methodologies for robotic cleaning. He was recently appointed as the President for Association of Process Industry (ASPRI) and held positions as Secretary and Treasurer in prior years. He is also spearheading ASPRI’s Digitalisation, Innovation and Technology Adoption, and Sustainability workgroups.

The Speaker will share how VR technology was adopted to train work crew on maintenance of High Flare Seal Replacement@150m. Driven and dynamic, Ms Rubab Khan is a final year student at Singapore Management University majoring in Economics and Finance. With a keen interest in upholding sustainability in the economy, she is motivated to incorporate social and environmental well-being into commercial strategies. She cares deeply about the community at large and her efforts range from working with disabled children to hosting a TEDx speech to shift the perception of secondary education.

A versatile host, she emerged as the winner of Voice Personality Hunt, one of the largest hosting competitions of Singapore and recently hosted for Madam President, Halimah Yacob. Ms Khan aims to further traverse her journey in public speaking alongside Economics, leading with an adaptable mindset and a perpetual willingness to learn.

Ms Stephanie Winata is a 3rd Year Information Systems Undergraduate from Singapore Management University. Specialising in Business Analytics & Data Science, she hopes to use technology in resource allocation and supply chain efficiency. Intrigued by the role of technology in today’s age of digital transformation, she took on a 6-month internship with Shopee as a Market Research & Data Analytics Intern.

Besides being a technology enthusiast, Ms Winata is also part of SMU’s Broadcast and Entertainment Club as a trained emcee. Additionally, she is the Marketing Director and a dancer with SMU Caderas Latinas, the University’s premier salsa club which specialises in partner work and tricks.

Synopsis | Enhancing WSH Communications

The speaker will share his project to promote safety culture on campus. He will talk about his ideation to create a Telegram bot to facilitate guided and faster WSH reporting. This will help to engage fellow youths and raise the general safety and health awareness across the campus. A short demo of how the beta version of the Telegram bot works is included.

Biography

Mr Javier Ng is a final-year undergraduate student at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering with Honors in Computer Engineering, specialising in Telematics (Intelligent Transportation System Engineering). He first developed an interest in technology after enrolling in Nanyang Polytechnic’s diploma programme in Telematics & Media Technology. After finishing his National Service (NS), he made the decision to continue his studies in the field of telematics. During his compulsory Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) where he undertakes paid employment with a company relevant to his programme, he further develops professional competencies in his field of studies. When he is free, he likes to do some weight training at home or playing games.

Synopsis | Enhancing WSH Communications

The speaker will share how her participation in a WSH video production aimed at educating students on possible workplace hazards before industry attachment gave voice to her sense of duty towards the safety and health of youths. She will share why she volunteered to be the lead talent in the video and sought to speak out on “unseen” hazards even at lower risk workplaces so that students from all faculties (including business and accountancy) can be more WSH aware and ready for work.

Biography

Ms Ariel Lim is a Hospitality Business graduate from Singapore Institute of Technology, specialising in MICE and Sales & Marketing. During her 8-month Integrated Work-Study Programme (IWSP), she worked at The Ascott Limited in the business process and innovation department where she took part in researching on new technologies to address COVID-19 challenges in the hotel sector. After graduating, she started working as an Advertising Audit Specialist, where she moderates ads based on the various countries’ policies and regulations to ensure that the audience only see content that is relevant and healthy.

The speaker will share how WSH concerns are woven into community work planning and execution at Singapore Red Cross. He will talk about his experiences with managing Risk Assessment and Safe Management Measures in a project to distribute daily essentials and care packs to vulnerable families and the elderly.

Biography

Mr Jerrold Lam is the Assistant Director at Singapore Red Cross Youth Chapters. His responsibilities include mentoring Youth Leaders on Project Management and looking after Junior College Red Cross Chapters.

Mr Lam is part of Project R.I.C.E.+, a youth-led nationwide fundraising and distribution drive for the vulnerable. Past iterations of the project have been hugely successful with $230,000 raised in 2021 and $430,000 raised in 2022. Despite not having formal training in Workplace Safety and Health, he demonstrates that youth leaders are always cognisant of potential hazards and mitigates these hazards by careful planning and execution.

Biography

Mr Martyn Chek is a Medical Social Worker working in a public hospital, and holds a Graduate Diploma in Social Work from the National University of Singapore. He began his journey with the Singapore Red Cross Youth as a Community First Aid Responder before stepping up to serve as a Youth Leader. He now serves as an Assistant Director for Youth Members in the North-East District. A member of the INSPIRIT community, Mr Chek is a youth advocate who is passionate about and champions youth volunteering in various capacities.

The speaker will share how WSH concerns are woven into community work planning and execution at Singapore Red Cross. He will talk about how WSH challenges were overcome during overseas missions to Laos in response to the Attapeu 2018 floods, and to Beijing in 2020 as part of the initial COVID-19 response.

Biography

Mr Samuel Ng is a youth volunteer leader with Singapore Red Cross. Under the Global Engagement Department, he was deployed to Attapeu Province, Lao PDR, in 2018 in response to the floods there and to Beijing, China, in 2020 as part of the initial COVID-19 response. During his session, he will be sharing some of the safety and health challenges faced during his missions, and how the team overcame those challenges.

Biography

Mr Yam Ah Mee is the Executive Director of Chip Eng Seng Corporation Ltd. He oversees the Group’s Construction Business. Previously, he held senior public sector responsibilities, including the Chief of Staff, RSAF; Deputy Secretary, Public Service Division, PMO; CEO/Dean of Civil Service College; Deputy Secretary, Air & Sea of Ministry of Transport; CEO of Land Transport Authority; and CEO of People’s Association. Mr Yam was also the Returning Officer for Singapore’s general elections held in 2011. Mr Yam holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First-Class Honours) from University of New South Wales, Australia, a Master of Business Administration from NUS, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, US. He also attended the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme from Harvard University, US, and is a Fellow member of the Society of Project Managers Singapore. Biography

Mr Silas Sng is currently the Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health in Singapore, a role which he has held since April 2019. As Commissioner, he is responsible for leading the Occupational Safety and Health Division, and working with partners and industries to improve Singapore’s WSH performance guided by the WSH2028 strategies. Mr Sng started his career with the Ministry of Manpower in 1997, inspecting factories and equipment such as boilers and cranes, as well as leading investigation into fatal or serious accidents. Over the years, he went on to assume various leadership roles in Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate as well as Work Injury Compensation Department. He is also involved in policy and legislative development, in particular, the enactment of the Workplace Safety and Health Act in 2006 as well as the Work Injury Compensation Act in 2019. He considers his role in saving lives and preventing accidents as a noble calling.

Biography

Mr Melvin Yong is the Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress and the Director of NTUC’s U Associate. He is also the Executive Secretary of the National Transport Workers’ Union and a Board Member of the Land Transport Authority. Mr Yong sits on the Singapore’s WSH Council Executive Committee and the Tripartite Oversight Committee on WSH. He is also a member of the Interagency Taskforce on Mental Health and Well-being. Mr Yong is an elected Member of Parliament for the Radin Mas Single Member Constituency and chairs the Tanjong Pagar Town Council. He is also the President of the Consumers Association of Singapore.

Biography

Mr Danny Chua is currently the Chief Executive Officer for CYC International Pte Ltd. He has created and patented methodologies for robotic cleaning. He was recently appointed as the President for Association of Process Industry (ASPRI) and held positions as Secretary and Treasurer in prior years. He is also spearheading ASPRI’s Digitalisation, Innovation and Technology Adoption, and Sustainability workgroups.

Biography

Mr Niranjan Masurekar is passionate about Safety and Operational Excellence (OE) and a believer in developing competency in people to produce the required results. He started as a Fire Fighter and got interested in the area of Safety. He had worked with Keppel Shipyard, Chevron Oronite, General Electric (Plastics) and Pfizer. Currently, he is the President of the Singapore Institution of Safety Officers and is passionate about developing and enhancing the skills of Safety Professionals in Singapore. He is also on the WSH Council for Chemical Industries and with the Global Engineering Team of Pfizer Asia Manufacturing Pte Ltd as a Safety and OpEx Lead.

Biography

Ms Kala Anandarajah heads the Competition & Antitrust and Trade Practice at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP. Her key practice areas are Competition (merger control, cartels, investigations, etc), Trade (export controls, FTAs, sanctions etc), and Consumer Protection. She also handles Employment, Environmental (EHS) & Sustainability (ESG), and Corporate Governance. She has had many firsts in her career, handling difficult and complex matters, demystifying and simplifying issues in a business centric manner to achieve the clients’ aim. She has been lauded by clients as having “unrivalled knowledge and understanding of the law and uniquely… able to understand very complicated businesses and their likely reactions” by Chambers Asia-Pacific.

Ms Kala is, amongst others, a board member of the Building and Construction Authority, the institute for Human Resource Professionals, the External Review Panel of Safety in SAF (MINDEF), and is Deputy Chair of the Appeal Board – Council of Estate Agents (MND). She was until March 2020 the Deputy Chairperson of the Workplace Safety and Health Council. In 2022, Ms Kala was awarded The Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat) and in 2014, she was awarded the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat), both of which are conferred by the President of Singapore.
